The Tradition of the Bridal Sixpence
The sixpence tradition comes from the well-loved rhyme:
“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe.”
Scots have long shared coins as symbols of luck, prosperity, and love in marriage. Our lucky sixpence carries this legacy forward with a Scottish twist ~ perfect for Brides seeking meaningful tokens with heritage and charm
Making Our Lucky Sixpence for the Scottish Bride
Discover the story behind our handcrafted Lucky Sixpence for the Bride, a heartfelt nod to Scottish wedding traditions ~ reimagined with a beautiful thistle-inspired design. At Scottish Keepsakes, we take pride in turning historic customs into timeless keepsakes, and this special gift is no exception.
Handcrafted with Care: Our Process
Old, pre-circulated coins can be fairly grubby! We source ours from highly respected coin dealers. It’s fascinating to imagine where these coins may have travelled in their lifetime and who has handled them over these many years!
Each genuine sixpence coin is cleaned and polished in our workshop using a tumbling machine until clean, bright and shining, before being dried and carefully made into a beautiful gift. We pair each coin with one of our designs….in this instance, pastel-toned colours featuring original artwork of a bridal shoe framed by soft Scottish thistles ~ a symbol of strength and beauty….a delicate blend of romance, tradition, and Scottish pride.
